Israel Adesanya announces departure from City Kickboxing
Israel Adesanya has announced his departure from City Kickboxing, the Auckland-based gym that has been his home since 2010. The 36-year-old former UFC middleweight champion posted a video to his YouTube channel on Thursday confirming the split, which became effective on May 20. The decision comes roughly two months after Adesanya suffered a knockout loss to Joe Pyfer at UFC Seattle, extending his recent skid to four consecutive defeats.
Adesanya explained that the parting, while difficult, was necessary for the next phase of his career. Speaking directly to head coach Eugene Bareman, he stated: "This was something a long time coming behind the scenes, and we have an understanding. I won't lie; it sucks." The fighter emphasized that he needs focused, individualized coaching rather than competing for attention in a gym full of elite athletes. "What I need for myself is focused, individual training," Adesanya said, acknowledging the emotional toll of leaving the organization that shaped his rise to championship status.
Despite the sadness surrounding the exit, Adesanya paid tribute to City Kickboxing and its role in his career, crediting the gym with transforming him into a world-class fighter and acknowledging his own contribution to raising the gym's international profile. He thanked coach Bareman, teammates Cameron Rowston and Brogan Anderson, and kickboxer Doug Viney for their support over the years. "It's bittersweet, but it's the right thing for me. Especially where I am at in my career, it's exactly what I needed," he reflected. Adesanya made clear he intends to process the change privately, asking observers not to dwell on the separation as he seeks a fresh start under new coaching guidance.
