Paulo Costa offers ‘fair’ option in UFC ultimatum; Magomed Ankalaev responds

Paulo Costa has escalated his contract dispute with the UFC by publicly laying out three options for the promotion's leadership. Fresh off back-to-back wins at light heavyweight—a knockout of previously undefeated Azamat Murzakanov and a victory over Roman Kopylov—Costa has one fight remaining on his current deal. The issue: his contract stipulates a three-round purse structure, but the UFC is reportedly pushing for a five-round main event, which would require additional compensation in Costa's view.
In a detailed social media post addressed to UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell, Costa outlined his position. Option A would see him take a three-round fight against any light heavyweight on the roster, honoring the existing contract terms. Option B would grant him a five-rounder if the promotion substantially raises his purse to match the extended commitment. Option C is a full release from his contract. Costa framed the ultimatum as "simple and clean," suggesting he views his asks as reasonable and non-negotiable.
The timing adds intrigue to the light heavyweight title picture. Carlos Ulberg won the championship against Jiri Prochazka but suffered a knee injury that will sideline him through 2027, leaving the division without a clear path forward. Costa has reportedly expressed interest in fighting for an interim belt if the financial terms justify re-signing long-term with the organization.
Former light heavyweight title contender Magomed Ankalaev quickly volunteered to face Costa, having recently finished Bogdan Guskov in July. Ankalaev's response was pointed: he framed himself as Costa's "get-out-of-jail-free card," noting that a Costa victory would launch the Brazilian into free agency and potentially lucrative opportunities, while Ankalaev defeating him would only meet expectations. The fight would position the winner as a natural interim title challenger while Costa's contract dispute plays out.
