Uros Medic reveals he suffered serious injury just days before UFC Belgrade: ‘I was just limping around fight week’

Uros Medic's homecoming at UFC Belgrade almost became a cautionary tale when the Serbian welterweight tore his meniscus on Monday of fight week—just days before his main event clash with Daniel Rodriguez. Despite the serious injury, Medic was determined not to let anything derail his long-awaited opportunity to compete in front of his home crowd.
With help from the UFC Performance Institute, medical staff managed the swelling enough for Medic to fight, though he spent fight week limping and carefully concealing the damage to avoid giving Rodriguez any psychological advantage. "I was just limping around fight week, hoping nobody would see and it wouldn't come out in the news," Medic told MMA Fighting. He described the real battle as occurring outside the cage—managing the injury, cutting weight, and preparing while compromised.
When the opening bell rang, none of that struggle showed. Medic delivered a devastating knockout in the opening 30 seconds, dropping Rodriguez with a hard shot and forcing a referee stoppage. The performance electrified a raucous Belgrade crowd and capped what Medic called "the most incredible experience I have had as far as sports go." He emphasized that fighting through adversity separates elite professionals from the rest: "When everything is stacking against you... you need to understand that you already burnt the boats."
Medic confirmed he will need arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus tear, but expects only about a month of recovery time—brief enough that he's targeting a return before year-end, ideally in November or December. After that, he plans to enjoy snowboarding and mountain time to recharge.
