‘Living in some alternative reality’: Frederic Vosgrone admits ‘I don’t even know’ what makes him an MMA star

Frederic Vosgrone's rise to stardom has left even the Dutch fighter puzzled. The light heavyweight made his Oktagon debut in April 2025 with a viral moment that changed everything: he submitted Jorick Montagnac via arm-triangle choke after dominant grappling, and the clip exploded across social media. Within weeks, his Instagram following ballooned from 4,000 to hundreds of thousands.
Vosgrone, now undefeated at 5–0 in MMA with a background in jiu-jitsu, found himself posing for photos with celebrities like Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt while competing on smaller European shows. His subsequent submission victory over Fabio Moraes only amplified his European profile. As he prepared to face veteran Karlos Vemola at Oktagon 94 in Frankfurt on September 26, he grappled with the surreal nature of his overnight fame.
"I don't even know" what makes him a star, Vosgrone told MMA Fighting. He acknowledged the initial months felt like "living in some alternative reality" but said he has since learned to balance the distractions. With Instagram followers now exceeding 665,000, he realized that saying yes to every podcast, appearance, and interview would undermine his training. He credits social media algorithms and a lack of elite German fighters in his weight class for part of his appeal, but remains unsure why audiences in Brazil and beyond have embraced him so thoroughly.
Despite the pressure and elevated visibility, Vosgrone expressed confidence in his fighting ability and jiu-jitsu pedigree. He acknowledged that one well-placed punch could end the fun and turn him into "a meme," but said the added scrutiny fuels his drive to improve. His ultimate goal remains a UFC contract—a longtime dream since his jiu-jitsu days. For now, he is simply excited to return to Germany, where fan support at his last fight energized him, and to prove himself against Vemola on the bigger stage.
