Edson Barboza has blunt message for promoters after UFC retirement

UFC veteran Edson Barboza has closed the door on his 17-year mixed martial arts career and wants no part of a comeback. The 39-year-old Brazilian announced his retirement after suffering his fourth consecutive defeat, a finish loss to Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. Barboza removed his gloves in the Octagon while the crowd chanted his name—a moment made especially emotional by the presence of his children, who had never attended one of his fights before.

While age might seem the obvious culprit, Barboza pointed to a severe left-eye injury sustained against Lerone Murphy as the true turning point in his decision. He emphasized that he still possesses the skill to defeat many fighters but acknowledged that elite-level competition is no longer feasible. Barboza's message to managers and promoters was direct: "Managers, event promoters, please leave me alone. Don't offer me any fights."

After more than three decades immersed in combat sports since childhood, Barboza recognizes that walking away will require adjustment. However, retirement does not mean abandoning the sport entirely. Having trained under dozens of elite coaches worldwide, Barboza plans to transition into coaching and mentoring, viewing it as an obligation to share the knowledge he has accumulated throughout his career.
