Conor McGregor responds to ‘nonsense’ claims he was injured going into UFC 329, reveals who he wants in final UFC fight

Conor McGregor has dismissed claims that he entered UFC 329 with a pre-existing knee injury, calling the conspiracy theories "nonsense" on social media. McGregor's comeback fight against Max Holloway ended when his knee gave out early in the bout after a jumping roundhouse kick; videos circulated suggesting he may have been compromised beforehand, including footage of him appearing off-balance while removing his shoes at octagon side. McGregor blamed the latter on a sweaty foot and the mechanics of taking off his shoe, asserting he was in peak condition.
The Irish fighter did suffer a torn ACL against Holloway in their first meeting in 2013, continuing to fight and winning by decision. However, McGregor stressed that the circumstances differ: his first injury occurred mid-second round on his rear leg while on the canvas with no weight-bearing requirement, whereas the recent injury affected his lead leg and impacted every movement. He also clarified that he did not call for the referee stoppage—Mike Beltran made the call after McGregor struggled to stand and move effectively.
McGregor confirmed he will undergo surgery to repair the damage and expects to return in 2027 pending MRI results. He made clear his preferred opponent for his final UFC fight: Max Holloway. McGregor is competing on the last fight of his current contract and has not indicated plans to sign a longer-term deal, though he will have numerous options once healed.
