Islam Makhachev believes Ilia Topuria will rule UFC lightweight division
Islam Makhachev has backed Ilia Topuria to establish dominance atop the UFC lightweight division. Topuria, currently undefeated at 17–0, will defend his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. While the former featherweight champion has already captured gold, Makhachev sees the division's future squarely in his hands. Speaking to UFC on TNT Sports, Makhachev acknowledged that Gaethje remains a dangerous opponent with a storied career, but believes the interim champion is past his competitive peak. "Topuria is the new generation," Makhachev said. "I still believe Gaethje can do something. But he's a little bit old right now. He's a good fighter, legend. He showed us many very good fights. But now I think it's Topuria's time for lightweight." Makhachev himself sits at the top of the welterweight rankings with a 28–1 record, and a matchup between the two elite fighters has been widely anticipated. Topuria's ascent through the ranks has been remarkable, and endorsements from established champions like Makhachev underscore his status as one of the sport's brightest talents moving forward.
