Umar Nurmagomedov eager for rumored bout against 'punching bag' Yadong Song

Umar Nurmagomedov has expressed enthusiasm for a rumored matchup against Yadong Song after his originally scheduled UFC Abu Dhabi bout against David Martinez fell through due to injury. The undefeated-until-recently bantamweight contender was blunt about his assessment of Song, calling him a "punching bag" and citing Song's lopsided loss to Sean O'Malley as evidence that the Chinese fighter does not belong among the division's elite.

Nurmagomedov (20-1) was perfect through his first seven UFC fights before suffering his lone professional defeat in a title shot against Merab Dvalishvili last year. He has since rebounded with consecutive victories over Mario Bautista and Deiveson Figueiredo. Song (23-9), by contrast, has struggled to find consistency at the highest level, alternating wins and losses against top competition—including defeats to Petr Yan and O'Malley alongside wins over Henry Cejudo and Figueiredo in his last four bouts.

In his candid remarks to Adam Zubayraev, Nurmagomedov questioned Song's durability and composure under pressure, noting how Song absorbed punishment late in the O'Malley fight. The matchup would represent a significant step down in competition level for Nurmagomedov as he looks to stay active while waiting for his next top-tier opportunity in the bantamweight division.
