Jean Silva travelled to Israel to corner his Fighting Nerds teammate Ilay Barzilay (7-1) at Gordon Fight Nights 1 on July 27 in Tel Aviv, a decision that drew public backlash given the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and the scrutiny some Israeli athletes face. Silva, a respected sparring partner and teammate of Barzilay's, made the trip despite knowing it would provoke criticism. "I'm here 100% because of the fight of the Fighting Nerds fighter Ilay, who's one of my main sparring partners," Silva explained on X. "Nobody could make it, and this fight could take him to the contender series. He shows up for all my fights, I knew it was gonna be controversial but I chose not to ditch my brother of many years." Barzilay (7-1) is preparing to face Lucas Almeida (15-5) and is coming off a loss to Richie Miranda in a Legacy Fighting Alliance lightweight title bid last August. Almeida, dropped from the UFC in February after a two-fight losing streak, brings a 15-5 record into the bout.
