Mikey Musumeci targets UFC flyweight title with MMA transition
Mikey Musumeci, one of professional jiu-jitsu's most accomplished athletes, is plotting a transition to mixed martial arts with an ambitious long-term goal: winning the UFC flyweight title at 125 pounds. The 30-year-old grappling specialist defeated Bryce Mitchell at UFC BJJ 11 on September 24 and has announced plans to make his MMA debut soon.
Musumeci is acutely aware of the gap between his world-class grappling and the demands of professional mixed martial arts. His primary focus during this transitional period is developing his striking to the point where he can close distance safely without being knocked out, allowing him to take fights to the ground where his dominance is assured.
"My goal would be to go to the UFC at 125 pounds and win that belt," Musumeci told Ariel Helwani. "I have a lot of work to do before then. That's us seeing super far ahead. One match at a time. Let's get my level up, let's get me not to get killed standing and let's get me to the floor. I think people are going to be really surprised at my level."
Musumeci had originally planned to make his MMA debut the day after his grappling win over Mitchell, but that matchup fell through. He is now in talks with multiple promotions about his debut schedule. The methodical approach—prioritizing striking development and incremental progress over rushing into the Octagon—suggests Musumeci understands the learning curve required to transition from elite grappling competition to the multi-faceted demands of professional MMA.
