Jon Jones takes blame for Gable Steveson’s controversial UFC 331 exit
Jon Jones has accepted responsibility for Gable Steveson's controversial exit from the Octagon following his 12-second knockout loss to Sean Sharaf at UFC 331 on September 19 in Los Angeles. Steveson faced criticism after leaving the cage with Jones, his cornerman, before Sharaf received his hand raised in victory.
Jones posted on X to clarify the circumstances, stating the decision to leave was his own. He explained that facing such a situation for the first time, his instinctive reaction was to remove his injured friend from the Octagon to ensure his wellbeing.
"I've seen some reports online and I really wanted to clear the air," Jones wrote. "It was my decision to take Gable straight to the back after the fight. Honestly, it was the first time in this situation for me and my instant reaction was to get my friend to the back to make sure he was OK."
Despite the disappointing result, Jones expressed confidence in Steveson's future. The former two-division champion believes Steveson possesses the work ethic and competitive drive necessary to rebound from the loss and eventually establish himself among the UFC's elite heavyweights. Jones stated he stands by Steveson and expects him to return stronger, positioning himself as one of the division's best fighters.
