Khamzat Chimaev reveals details about injuries requiring time off, plans to challenge for UFC middleweight title again

Khamzat Chimaev is managing nagging injuries but insists his recovery will be brief, planning to stay active in the meantime rather than take extended time away from competition.
The UFC middleweight contender is eyeing another title shot after losing a close decision to champion Sean Strickland in May. While Chimaev remains focused on reclaiming the belt, he acknowledges the champion is likely tied up defending against Nassourdine Imavov before the end of 2026. In the interim, Chimaev has turned his attention toward Caio Borralho, who he says accepted a challenge for a November or December fight, though Borralho is currently dealing with an injury.
Chimaev told MMA Fighting that his current issues stem from hand injuries—a consequence of his heavy striking power—rather than serious damage requiring prolonged rehabilitation. "It's not crazy big injuries where you need to be off from sparring," Chimaev said. "If I do break off, it's going to be one or two months. Still going to be doing recovery, training."
The Chechen fighter has been vocal on social media about fighting sooner rather than later, and he maintains his ambition to reclaim the middleweight title. Whether facing Strickland again or a new champion, Chimaev is intent on staying sharp. He's also scheduled to face Gilbert Burns this Saturday in Miami, continuing his push for activity while managing his recovery needs.
