Khamzat Chimaev won’t change wrestling style after Umar Nurmagomedov KO
Khamzat Chimaev remains committed to his wrestling-heavy fighting style despite the recent knockout loss suffered by Umar Nurmagomedov. The Dagestani fighter fell to Yadong Song at UFC Freedom 250 when Song capitalized on a takedown attempt with a perfectly timed uppercut, sending Nurmagomedov to sleep mid-shot.
When asked if the high-profile knockout would prompt him to alter his approach, Chimaev dismissed the concern. The former UFC title contender emphasized that his wrestling foundation is built on daily repetition in the gym, and he sees no logical reason to abandon it in the Octagon. Chimaev acknowledged that unpredictable moments can happen to any fighter in MMA, but expressed confidence that such a fate won't befall him.
"Unfortunately, Umar lost, but I believe he will be back stronger," Chimaev told Red Corner MMA. "He is a guy with vast experience who's been doing this since he was a kid. But as for myself, I can't foresee being knocked down or KO'd. I will keep doing my job. I drill takedowns every day in the gym, so why shouldn't I do the same in the Octagon? Everything can happen in our sport."
Chimaev's unwavering commitment to his wrestling reflects the calculated risk inherent in combat sports. While Nurmagomedov's loss serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of shooting takedowns against dangerous strikers, elite grapplers like Chimaev view their wrestling prowess as a foundational strength that shouldn't be compromised by fear of isolated outcomes.
