Octagon newcomer learned twister submission technique from ex-UFC standout

Kyrgyz featherweight prospect Murtazali Magomedov marked his UFC debut with a stunning submission, securing one of the rarest finishes in promotion history. At UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday at the Apex in Las Vegas, Magomedov (11-0) faced Melsik Baghdasaryan (8-4). After Baghdasaryan landed early strikes, Magomedov quickly took him down and transitioned from a rear-naked choke attempt into a modified twister—one of only four such submissions ever recorded in the UFC—finishing the fight at 1:17 of round one.

Magomedov credited his training success to former UFC flyweight Askar Askarov, revealing the pair work together at their gym. "I work this technique long time," Magomedov said. "My brother, Askar Askarov teach me this technique." Askarov, who compiled a 15-1 record in the UFC with victories over Tim Elliott, Alexandre Pantoja, and Joseph Benavidez, parted ways with the promotion in 2022 after weight management struggles derailed his momentum.

Beyond the spectacular submission, Magomedov used his post-fight platform to call for action in the featherweight division. Despite characterizing himself as quiet by nature, the undefeated prospect believes the 145-pound class needs revitalization. "I want activity," he said. "But the featherweight division is almost dying. Let's bring it back to life and make it great again." With his debut finish already cementing his status as a prospect to watch, Magomedov's blend of technical prowess and competitive ambition positions him as a potential building block for division growth.
