Natalia Silva went from sleeping in UFC gym to fighting for gold
Natalia Silva is fighting for the vacant UFC women's flyweight title at UFC 332 on October 3, but her path to championship gold has been defined by extraordinary hardship and unwavering determination.
Silva (20-5), who faces Wang Cong (10-1) for the 125-pound belt at Delta Center in Salt Lake City, has reflected on her remarkable journey from sleeping in a gym to competing for championship glory. The Brazilian revealed that she once had no home other than her training facility, where she slept on a physical therapy bed. Despite multiple moments when she considered quitting the sport, Silva credits her faith and the support of those around her with sustaining her commitment to MMA.
"I think what brought me here was believing in myself and never quitting and continuing regardless of what happens," Silva told the UFC. "No matter what I did in my life and what I was able to accomplish, it was always a very tough journey. I have gone through a lot of challenges. There were moments that I had to live in the gym. I actually lived in the physical therapy room; I slept in a PT bed for a while. Things were never easy. And in many moments, I thought of giving up, of quitting… Always, God has strengthened me, surrounded me with people with a kind word for me."
Silva has compiled an impressive 8-0 record inside the UFC, with recent victories over Jessica Andrade, Alexa Grasso, and Rose Namajunas. Wang, her opponent for the vacant title, is riding a four-fight winning streak and most recently defeated Tracy Cortez. For Silva, this title opportunity represents the culmination of years of sacrifice and perseverance.
