Jared Cannonier explains why being UFC's gatekeeper isn't an insult

Jared Cannonier is embracing his role as a middleweight gatekeeper rather than viewing it as a setback. The 42-year-old veteran faces rising British prospect Christian Leroy Duncan on July 18 at UFC Oklahoma City, and sees the matchup as a crucial opportunity to stabilize his ranking and reignite his title ambitions.

Cannonier has struggled with consistency in recent fights, posting a 11–9 UFC record highlighted by three losses in his last four bouts. Instead of treating the encounter with the 30-year-old Duncan—who arrives on a four-fight winning streak—as a springboard for his opponent, "The Killa Gorilla" views it as a chance to prove he remains among the division's elite.

"So here I am, the guy who hasn't been able to win as consistently as I would like," Cannonier said. "So therefore, I am having to welcome these guys to the division. These are really good opportunities for me to maintain my position and start redirecting myself back towards that title. So, for that, I am appreciative of the company for this matchup."

Cannonier expressed confidence in his skillset and development, stating that he has only improved as a fighter. A victory over Duncan would help stabilize his standing in the 185-pound rankings and position him for another title run after falling short in his previous attempts.
