Khamzat Chimaev changes course on immediate Sean Strickland rematch

Khamzat Chimaev has shifted his stance on an immediate rematch with Sean Strickland following his UFC middleweight title loss. Instead of demanding an immediate shot at "The King," Chimaev is now willing to wait and challenge the winner of the targeted Sean Strickland vs. Nassourdine Imavov 2 bout expected later this year.

In an interview, Chimaev acknowledged Imavov's long wait for a title opportunity. "How long has Imavov been waiting now? Probably around two years. He's already the contender. Whoever wins, we'll take him," Chimaev said. The shift represents a more measured approach from "Borz," who had been vocally pushing for an immediate rematch in the weeks following his loss.

Chimaev also addressed speculation that he might move up to light heavyweight. He firmly dismissed the idea, stating his commitment to the middleweight division. "Until we break everybody at 185, I'm not going anywhere," he told Ushatayka in the interview. This contradicts earlier hints from his team that a weight class jump could be in the cards post-loss. By targeting the Strickland-Imavov winner, Chimaev positions himself as a legitimate contender while respecting the promotional landscape and Imavov's long tenure as a top contender.
