War of words: Ilia Topuria, Justin Gaethje trade barbs ahead of UFC White House event
Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje have escalated their pre-fight rhetoric ahead of their UFC White House: Freedom 250 lightweight title unification bout on Sunday, June 14. The two fighters, initially cordial, have now engaged in a heated war of words that has taken personal turns.
Topuria (17-0), defending his lightweight championship against interim titleholder Gaethje (27-5), called out his opponent for crossing a line by commenting on his divorce and personal life. In a statement, the undefeated Georgian-Spaniard emphasized that while their relationship may be over, his ex-wife deserves respect as the mother of his daughter and said Gaethje should refrain from involving her in their dispute.
Gaethje responded by denying he had made statements about Topuria's wife, instead pointing out that Topuria himself had started the personal jabs by promising to knock him out in front of his father. Gaethje dismissed Topuria's complaints as hypocritical.
Topuria then escalated further, claiming that Gaethje's father was the one who initiated personal attacks by calling him a "short guy" and suggesting Gaethje would dominate him. Topuria promised to knock Gaethje out and confront his father about the comment afterward, telling Gaethje he would "break" him. The back-and-forth exchange underscores rising tension between the two competitors just days before their headline clash at the historic White House event.
