Joanderson Brito says coach predicted Giga Chikadze slip at UFC 331
Joanderson Brito opened UFC 331 with a first-round victory over Giga Chikadze in a featherweight bout, and the win came exactly as his coach predicted. Chikadze found early success with his signature body kicks and a head kick, but a crucial slip while throwing a kick turned the tide. Brito capitalized on the stumble, secured top position, and unleashed heavy ground-and-pound until the referee stepped in.
Brito revealed that his coaching staff had anticipated the mishap. Before the fight, Brito and his team noticed Chikadze dropping water on his feet to prepare for kicking while the canvas—brand new for the opening fight of the night—was slippery. Brito's coach called it: Chikadze would likely slip. "We expected him to start kicking," Brito explained. "When we walked in, we knew the tarp was brand new; it could be a little slippery. Then we saw him drop some water on his feet. Then [coach] said, 'Watch, cause he's gonna slip.'"
Brito, who is 8-3 in the UFC and riding a three-fight winning streak, declined to discuss immediate title ambitions. Instead, he cited legends like Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje as inspiration, aiming to establish himself as a perennial top-five contender rather than chase the belt. That consistency and longevity at the highest level, he said, is nearly equivalent to holding championship status.
