Conor McGregor criticizes Justin Gaethje as ‘OK’ at his best but ‘when he’s bad, he’s atrocious, he’s woeful’

Conor McGregor has weighed in on potential future opponents following his comeback, offering candid criticism of lightweight champion Justin Gaethje while stressing his focus on activity over specific matchups.

McGregor is set to return at UFC 329 on July 11 against Max Holloway at welterweight, marking his first competition since suffering a broken leg in 2021. While a clash with Gaethje—who recently defeated Ilia Topuria—intrigues observers, McGregor made clear he is not fixated on chasing any particular name.

"Justin's OK. When he's on, Justin's OK. When he's bad, he's atrocious. He's woeful," McGregor said of Gaethje. "He slaps his punches a lot. But he's very, very durable and he's unorthodox in his style." Despite the critical assessment, McGregor remains open to the matchup without actively pursuing it.

With only two fights left on his UFC contract, the Irishman emphasized his hunger for regular competition after five years away. He indicated the promotion is planning a July bout—the Holloway fight—followed by an April 2027 matchup, though nothing is finalized. McGregor has suggested he could make a run at the welterweight or lightweight title but refuses to name specific targets, noting that fighters "line up with hands out" when his name is mentioned.

"I have just more so activity. I wish to just compete," McGregor stated. "I want the smoke. I want all the smoke." He prefers to let his performances speak rather than engage in detailed callouts, positioning himself as ready for any credible opponent willing to step in the cage.
