Javier Mendez explains why UFC Prospect Magomed Zaynukov is ‘total MMA package’

Magomed Zaynukov stands out within Khabib Nurmagomedov's team, known for its dominant wrestling approach, as a striker who has evolved into a well-rounded mixed martial artist. The undefeated prospect (9-0) earned his UFC contract via Dana White's Contender Series and made his promotional debut against Damian Rzepecki at UFC Abu Dhabi, defeating him by decision with a striking-heavy performance.

Javier Mendez, head coach of the American Kickboxing Academy, believes Zaynukov has developed far beyond his Muay Thai roots. According to Mendez, Zaynukov gives Islam Makhachev tough rounds in sparring by sharpening his wrestling defense and even contributing offensive ground attacks—a significant evolution for a fighter whose background centers on striking.

"Chanco gives Islam some really tough rounds because he's gotten really good at defending and surviving on the ground and getting back up, or even attacking on the ground," Mendez told Red Corner MMA. "He's a total MMA package. Don't look at him as just a Thai boxer. He can do it all." Mendez predicted that Zaynukov's striking prowess will make him a fan favorite, noting that audiences typically gravitate toward strikers over pure grapplers. The coach's assessment suggests Zaynukov has the versatility and tools to become a significant force in the UFC's lightweight division.
