Watch: Phil Baroni’s stunning fall from UFC knockout artist to Mexican jail

Phil Baroni, the bombastic fighter known as the "New York Bad Ass," rose to prominence during mixed martial arts' formative era as a UFC knockout artist. Baroni (16–19) entered the UFC in 2001 and quickly became known for his aggressive style, commanding physique, and outspoken personality. His 18-second knockout of former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne stands as one of the most memorable finishes of his fighting career. Over two decades, he competed across multiple major promotions including Pride FC, Strikeforce, EliteXC, Bellator, and One Championship, facing high-level opponents such as Frank Shamrock, Nick Diaz, Evan Tanner, Matt Lindland, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, and Hayato Sakurai.

Baroni's life took a dramatic turn in January 2023 when he was arrested in Mexico following the death of his girlfriend in a hotel room in San Pancho, Nayarit. Mexican authorities charged him with aggravated femicide. As of the reporting date, Baroni remained incarcerated in Mexico with his case unresolved; he has not been convicted.
