UFC Vegas 120’s Manoel Sousa reveals heartwarming use of $100K bonus after $5 daily pay as coconut peeler

Brazilian lightweight Manoel Sousa earned a $100,000 performance bonus for his knockout victory at UFC Vegas 114, and the windfall represents a life-changing moment for a fighter who once earned just $5 per day peeling coconuts in his native Acaraú, Ceará.

Sousa's devastating third-round finish of Bolaji Oki in March marked a remarkable turnaround from his humble origins. Working from dawn to dusk in the coconut fields, he would have needed 54 years of labour to earn the equivalent of his UFC bonus. After the victory, Sousa returned home and renovated his mother Maria da Conceição's house, providing her with the comfort and stability she had never experienced. The reunion was emotional—Sousa had been away for four years focused on his fighting career, and he surprised her with an unannounced visit.

The 31-year-old's journey to the UFC was far from straightforward. After stints in Bellator and PFL, Sousa earned his contract by finishing Cristian Perez on Dana White's Contender Series. Since turning professional in 2019, he has balanced gruelling training sessions with financial hardship, often leaving work on Fridays in tears from the emotional and physical toll before rallying himself at the gym. He credits his late father, who worked tirelessly to raise the family, as inspiration, and believes his success vindicated his father's sacrifices.

Now competing at UFC Vegas 120 on short notice against Richie Miranda—a 31-year-old LFA champion riding a seven-fight winning streak—Sousa remains confident. He predicts his striking will overwhelm Miranda and expects his opponent to resort to wrestling once heavy punches land. Sousa emphasizes that the UFC's elite level is incomparable to regional promotions, and he intends to prove that point inside the cage.
