Henry Cejudo questions Khabib Nurmagomedov's place in GOAT debate

Henry Cejudo argues that Khabib Nurmagomedov does not merit a place among the greatest fighters of all time, citing the retired Russian's limited title defense record. While Nurmagomedov is widely respected as one of MMA's all-time greats, Cejudo contends that only title wins and defenses should count toward GOAT status, and three lightweight title defenses are insufficient.

Cejudo made his case on the "Pound 4 Pound" podcast while reflecting on Islam Makhachev's recent welterweight title defense against Ian Garry at UFC 330. The Olympic gold medalist argued that if Makhachev—Nurmagomedov's teammate and successor—had lost to Garry, he would have dropped significantly on pound-for-pound rankings, emphasizing that championship defenses are the true measure of greatness.

"No, Khabib is not there, bro," Cejudo said. "Three title defenses? Like, that's not it, bro. That's not it... Title defenses are what people see, bro... The most important thing, bro, is to win and then to defend."

Nurmagomedov (29-0) won the UFC lightweight title against Al Iaquinta and defended it three times—against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje—before retiring undefeated in 2020. Cejudo himself won UFC titles at flyweight and bantamweight with multiple defenses before retiring in 2020, returning three years later only to lose four straight fights, including his final bout to Payton Talbott in December.
