Fighter complains to Herb Dean about illegal shots following UFC Fight Night 279 loss

Andre Fili lodged a complaint with referee Herb Dean following his second-round TKO loss to Vinicius Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 279 in Las Vegas, alleging that illegal shots to the back of the head contributed to the stoppage.

Oliveira, making his featherweight debut at 24-4, survived early adversity when Fili landed heavy body kicks in the opening round. Late in the second round, Oliveira seized control with a stunning strike, then unleashed a vicious ground-and-pound sequence that forced Dean to intervene just before the round ended. However, replay footage suggests some of Oliveira's finishing strikes landed on the back of Fili's head—a prohibited target under MMA rules.

After the fight, Fili visibly complained to Dean about the illegal shots, with blood visible on the back of his head. Dean was seen reviewing the replay with Fili and the commission present. The incident marks another controversial stoppage involving Dean and shots to the back of the head. Earlier in June, Dean faced similar criticism when heavyweight Alex Pereira's loss to Ciryl Gane included apparent back-of-the-head strikes in Gane's finishing sequence. Dean subsequently released a video explaining his specific definition of illegal back-of-the-head shots. The Fili situation will likely reignite debate about consistency in enforcing this rule and Dean's oversight.
