Guilherme Uriel corrects his DWCS ‘sin’ with 50-second submission

Guilherme Uriel earned a UFC contract on his second Dana White's Contender Series appearance, submitting Mario Piazzon with a standing guillotine choke in 50 seconds during Week 3 of Season 10 on August 25.

Uriel (8-2), a heavyweight, had previously appeared on DWCS last year but suffered a knockout loss to Josh Hokit—a result he attributed to failing to lean on his jiu-jitsu skillset. This time, he came prepared. Knowing that Piazzon, a product of the renowned Galpao Da Luta gym, would likely pursue grappling exchanges, Uriel drilled takedown defense and fence positioning in camp. The strategy paid off immediately.

"One of the things from last time, it was my sin not to use my jiu-jitsu," Uriel said after the bout. "And with all due respect to Galpao Da Luta, that's a great gym. We know they're tough people, but we trained all that, all the time. We knew that jiu-jitsu was going to happen, and we, all the takedown defenses, just make sure that everything was against the fence. And when that neck was there, I said, 'I'm taking that home. I'm not going to let that go.'"

Uriel's finishing rate is striking: he has finished all eight of his career victories in the first round, making his rapid submission of Piazzon consistent with his track record of explosive, early offense. The submission secured his path to the UFC roster after his initial DWCS rejection.
