Justin Gaethje says whoever fights Ilia Topuria next is ‘going to be f*****,’ thinks a matchup with Paddy Pimblett would be great

Justin Gaethje has nothing but respect for Ilia Topuria, despite pulling off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history when he stopped the featherweight champion to claim the lightweight title at UFC White House earlier this year. Speaking on the Double Coverage podcast, Gaethje acknowledged that his shock victory required a perfect storm of conditions—his mindset, his coaching, his experience, and Topuria being in a vulnerable mental state.
Gaethje made clear he wasn't disparaging Topuria's abilities. "He is so skilled, and whoever fights him next is going to be f*cked," Gaethje said, emphasizing that Topuria remains one of the best fighters in the world when he's mentally locked in. Gaethje drew parallels to his own comeback story after his knockout loss to Max Holloway, noting that Topuria has the same opportunity to inspire the world by returning from defeat and proving doubters wrong.
When asked about potential opponents for Topuria, Gaethje suggested a matchup with Paddy Pimblett would be compelling. He praised Pimblett's unusual style and grappling prowess, particularly his ability to land unconventional strikes from awkward angles. "Paddy's a problem," Gaethje said. "These kids are hungry. I hope they fight. I think it will be great."
Meanwhile, Gaethje himself remains sidelined with hand injuries sustained in his fight with Topuria and doesn't expect to return until 2027. The lightweight champion has faced suggestions from fans and fighters to retire on top, but he's taking time to recover and will discuss his future with family around Christmas. While retirement remains a possibility, Gaethje isn't focused on that decision yet and wants to enjoy his accomplishment before determining what comes next.
