Shavkat Rakhmonov is back to wrestling in encouraging UFC return sign
Shavkat Rakhmonov is showing signs of recovery after being sidelined since December 2024 with multiple injury setbacks. The undefeated welterweight recently posted Instagram footage of himself performing light wrestling drills, offering an encouraging glimpse of his return to training.
Notably, Rakhmonov (19-0) appeared boot-free in the recent video—a departure from his appearance in an AFL Global interview posted September 6, where he wore a protective knee brace. The shift suggests meaningful progress in his rehabilitation and a renewed focus on Octagon readiness.
During that earlier interview, Rakhmonov expressed confidence in matching up with current welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. However, Makhachev dismissed the notion during a media scrum, pointing to Rakhmonov's protective gear and recovery timeline. "He gave an interview with a huge brace on his knee. He wants me to choose him and then wait for 1.5 years for him to recover?" Makhachev said.
Rakhmonov's recent wrestling footage—showing clinch work and improved mobility—suggests he may be closer to competitive readiness than Makhachev's comments implied. A healthy Rakhmonov returning to the welterweight division would reshape title contention, though his extended absence means rebuilding his case for a title shot remains a priority once he re-enters the Octagon.
