MMA Pound-for-Pound Rankings: Is Joshua Van destined to claim the No. 1 spot?

Joshua Van continues his meteoric rise in MMA's pound-for-pound landscape. The 24-year-old UFC flyweight champion secured a decisive five-round victory over Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331, cementing himself as one of the sport's elite fighters despite his youth.
Van's first meeting with Pantoja in December ended controversially when the challenger suffered a severe elbow dislocation, raising questions about whether Van had truly proved himself against the future Hall of Famer. Those questions have now been answered emphatically. In a genuine back-and-forth contest, Van outworked his seasoned opponent over the full distance, leaving no doubt about his superiority and the legitimacy of his title reign.
The performance catapulted Van from No. 11 to No. 3 in MMA Fighting's pound-for-pound rankings, trailing only Islam Makhachev and Petr Yan. At an age when most fighters are still finding their footing, Van has now notched two title defenses and positioned himself among the sport's most dominant competitors. Should Yan stumble in his trilogy bout against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 333, Van could claim the No. 2 spot. With continued success, he could eventually join Demetrious Johnson as one of the rare flyweights considered the pound-for-pound best in the world.
Van's next likely challenger is Manel Kape, the former RIZIN star whose technical arsenal poses a legitimate threat. However, if Van continues to perform at this level, his ascent to the sport's elite tier appears inevitable. For a fighter still months away from his 25th birthday, the ceiling appears limitless.
