Jose Aldo returns after 17 months, grapples Marlon Vera to draw
Jose Aldo made his long-awaited return to competition on Sunday, battling Marlon Vera to a draw in a 10-minute submission grappling match at Hype Fighting in Quito, Ecuador. The UFC Hall of Famer had been sidelined for 17 months since his final octagon appearance against Aiemann Zahabi, while Vera, an Ecuadorian UFC bantamweight, brought the home-crowd advantage to the event.
The match began with Vera applying early pressure, driving the Brazilian toward the cage and seeking takedowns. Aldo adopted a largely defensive posture early on before pulling guard roughly six minutes in. Vera threatened with a heel hook from that position, but Aldo successfully escaped the submission attempt. Both fighters returned to their feet in the closing stages and remained there through the final horn, resulting in a stalemate.
The event, which also featured grappling and bare-knuckle boxing action, was additionally scheduled to showcase former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. However, organizers announced that Covington fell ill and was hospitalized, forcing his withdrawal from the card. Despite the draw with Vera, Aldo's return marked a significant moment for the legendary fighter as he explored new avenues outside traditional UFC competition.
