Merab Dvalishvili says he fought Petr Yan's fight in UFC title loss
Merab Dvalishvili has identified the critical mistake that cost him his UFC bantamweight title in his rematch against Petr Yan last December. After dominating their first bout in 2023 via unanimous decision, Dvalishvili found himself outmatched in the sequel, losing a unanimous decision to Yan's superior boxing and technical precision.
Dvalishvili's analysis is straightforward: he fought Yan's fight rather than his own. The Georgian champion, who had been a heavy favorite heading into the rematch, strayed from his wrestling-heavy approach and engaged in a striking exchange with one of bantamweight's most skilled boxers. Yan, displaying a technical masterclass, systematically picked apart Dvalishvili on the feet. The Russian's improved takedown defense also played a crucial role, preventing Dvalishvili from executing his primary offensive strategy.
Now preparing for a trilogy bout scheduled for UFC 333 on October 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, Dvalishvili is confident he has made the tactical adjustments necessary to reclaim his throne. "I think the second fight I was fighting his fight," Dvalishvili told MMA Fighting. "This time I will just be myself. I think I'll be much sharper and I know I can beat this guy." He acknowledged Yan's striking credentials while expressing excitement for the rubber match.
With both fighters now 1-1 in their series, the trilogy represents a chance for Dvalishvili to reassert his dominance in the division and reclaim the title Yan took from him. The question heading into Abu Dhabi is whether the Georgian's strategic self-awareness will translate into a return to form.
