Chimaev had initially suggested a move to light heavyweight following the defeat, but quickly pivoted to pursue a return with Strickland. Days after UFC 328, Chimaev's team released a statement indicating he was "obsessed" with securing a rematch. The UFC has yet to publicly confirm its direction for the middleweight title picture.

Strickland has other potential challengers in the mix. Nassourdine Imavov, riding a five-fight winning streak at middleweight, represents a viable title-defense option should the promotion opt to move past the Chimaev rematch for now.
