Islam Makhachev recalls epic school fight alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov
Islam Makhachev has recalled a wild school-day brawl from his youth in Dagestan, when he and fellow UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov found themselves in a massive fight between rival schools. In an interview with Red Corner MMA, the lightweight champion (28-1) described a chaotic scene with roughly 500 fighters on each side. Though young and initially outmatched by older boys on the opposing school's roster, the tide turned when Nurmagomedov and his friends Hussein and Musa arrived to reinforce their side. "We needed some fire," Makhachev explained. "Then Khabib and some of his friends joined us. Things turned our way and the other guys started running away. They just jumped in their cars and we gained confidence."
Makhachev and Nurmagomedov grew up together in the mountainous Dagestan region of Russia, an area known for a rugged upbringing where standing your ground in street confrontations was often a necessity to avoid bullying. Both have spoken publicly over the years about how fighting was woven into their childhood experience. The anecdote offers a window into the formative years of two of the UFC's most dominant lightweights and the culture that shaped their fighting mentality from an early age.
