The Ultimate Insider: Behind the scenes of TUF 34, Michael Bisping makes big sacrifice to save fight

Michael Bisping went to extraordinary lengths to keep a fight alive on The Ultimate Fighter 34, even shaving his head to ensure the bout took place—a gesture that ultimately benefited his rival Daniel Cormier's team.
Brazilian strawweight Tina Black, competing for Team Cormier, defeated Team Bisping's Natalia Alves in Episode 5, pushing Cormier's squad to a 3-2 season lead. Black's striking proved decisive; she out-landed Alves and neutralized the Brazilian's wrestling attempts before finishing the fight with a knockout flurry in the second round.
The road to the fight was anything but smooth. Alves struggled severely with her weight cut, requiring an extra hour to attempt to make the 115-pound strawweight limit. Despite Bisping's hands-on involvement—including literally staying in the sauna with her during the final stages—Alves came in at 116.5 pounds, missing weight. Black could have refused to fight and received an automatic bye to the semifinals. Instead, a deal was brokered: Cormier would pay Black $1,000 to accept the bout (Black later said she received $2,000), and Bisping would shave his head as a show of commitment.
The gesture resonated with Bisping's team. Guest blogger Xavier Franklin praised the coach's genuine passion, noting that the sacrifice motivated the entire squad. "If he wants us to win this bad, we need to want to win as well," Franklin reflected.
Franklin and other fighters had warned Alves about her snacking habits in the TUF house, predicting the weight-cut disaster. Her lack of dietary discipline during camp likely made the final hours unnecessarily brutal. Franklin acknowledged the sympathy for Alves but also noted that missed weights create real problems for opponents—an issue he'd faced multiple times in his own career without a former champion stepping in to help salvage the situation.
